In April of 2024 I had the opportunity to support the first vision quest ceremony that my community hosted in Sedgefield, South Africa. The ceremony, led by Don Valerio Cohaila (Freddy) of Pachamama Native American Church, was full of surprises that left my spirit in awe. The intention is to pray for us and our loved ones, communities, and to create a space for prayer. We are also bridging the knowledge and wisdom traditions of so many great indigenous peoples, who can help us ground and connect to the spirit of the earth and her eternal heartbeat. I felt like I was blessed by my ancestors as I was able to meet an elder of my people for the first time earlier this year at the first vision quest in South Africa. King Khoisan has been protesting and camping at Government Union buildings in South Africa since 2018 to get Khoi and Saan people, the indigenous people of southern Africa to be recognized not as coloreds, get the Khoi language recognized, get stolen land back, and be recognized as First Nation People. On my maternal lineage my mother’s mother, Grandma Julia has Khoi ancestry. Because of this vision quest ceremony, I connected with my people, and I am learning Khoi language to help tap into my roots. It felt like a miracle that King Khoisan joined us and insisted on participating in the vision quest. Connecting, witnessing and supporting his prayer deepened my appreciation and helped me to see the depth of his work for indigenous rights. My dear friend Jean Lazarus, who envisioned, set up and managed the first vision quest in South Africa along with many helping hands, always advises to give back. We decided to create a space for Indigenous and Native Peoples of South Africa to share traditions, philosophies and practices, receive support, financially and otherwise. Presented as a way for the exchange of knowledge, ideas, and experiences to be met in reciprocity. The Vision Quest South Africa Foundation is a place to donate and support a vision of deep connection, exchange of information and cultural education, while building community in this family of love and light.
